May is a 56’ cruiser stern narrowboat built in 1996 by Alvechurch for part of their hire fleet. She has been well looked after by her current owner since 2011.
Ex hire boats tend to have been well looked after having benefitted from regular blacking, servicing and general maintenance. Accessability of systems is also usually easy for speedy repairs if necessary.
She is also built to accomodate numbers, with 5 berths and two pumpout loos.
She is a very light boat with 12 windows and white painted ply to the walls and ceilings.
The well deck is 4’ long with bench seats either side and the water tank underneath. This leads, through stable doors, into the saloon.
This is 8’ long and houses a couple of super comfy leather reclining armchairs opposite the solid fuel stove. There is a CD/radio stereo in here also.
The 6’ galley follows and utilities comprise of a good sized sink with drainer, a 12v fridge, and a 4 burner gas hob with separate grill and oven. There is plenty of storage space in the various cupboards.
The shower room is next. The first of two pumpout loos is in here, along with the shower cubicle and a counter sunk basin over a couple of shelves.
Moving aft is the ‘bunk room’. This has three bunk beds with storage under each of the bottom bunks and a wardrobe at the foot of one.
Then follows a small room with the second pump out loo and ceramic handwash basin, before moving into the main bedroom in the aft cabin. This has a fixed double bed (drawers underneath), a wardrobe at the foot of the bed and a cupboard over. There are further storage options either side of the rear steps which lead to the nearly 8’ long stern deck. The ever popular Isuzu 42 sits under.
She was last blacked in Oct 2019 (+ new anodes), and 12v is supplied by a bank of 4 batteries. There is a standalone generator for independent 230v supply. Lighting is a mixture of Halogen and low energy bulbs and the central heating is from an Alde gas boiler (due for repair 5th May)
She is a lovely, simple vessel, adequately equipped for holidays or residential use, and would make a lovely boat for a large family or, with modification to the bunk room, a really cosy home for a family of two or three.
