Coddiwomple means ‘to travel in a purposeful manner towards a vague destination’. A lovely name for a lovely boat. She is a really sweet 40’ cruiser stern narrowboat built in 1999 by Dale Leisure and she is in lovely condition benefitting from a full survey in 2018, a blacking in 2020 and a full repaint in 2019. She has been well looked after and it shows, both inside and out.
The boat can be entered from front or rear, but from the front, steps lead down from the well deck, through glazed front doors, into the 10’6” saloon. The well deck itself is 4’ long and has bench seats either side with lockable storage underneath. The saloon is a spacious room with a solid fuel stove by the front door, a large cupboard opposite and a good sized and very comfy sofabed offering a spare double berth.
The walk through galley sits aft and utilities comprise of a 4 burner gas hob, oven & grill, a 12v fridge (with icebox), and a sink with draining board. There are plenty of cupboards for storage, and there is also a half height wardrobe in here for hanging clothes.
The loo / bathroom area follows. The loo (a Thetford casstte) is in a cabin on the starboard side, and opposite is the shower and the wash basin set. The doors for these rooms cleverly double back to shut off the area and give privacy / space for showering. The basin is ceramic set over a cupboard and the shower is a vinyl lined cubicle with a curtain rail.
The aft cabin is the bedroom. By day this houses two opposing couches (storage under). A demountable table could very easily be installed in here to make it into a dining room / day room and the couches serve as two single beds, but also turn into a full width double bed.
Steps lead up onto the cruiser stern deck. This is a roomy area and good social space at 6’ long. The engine, new in 2009 and with only 905 hours on the clock, sits under the deck boards. The back deck has a tonneau cover for protection in the winter.
There is a 230v landline hook up plug for 230v, and 12v is from the large bank of 4 domestic batteries (new in 2018). All the lighting is LED, and the hot water system is heated by the engine. Heating on the boat is from the solid fuel stove.
For a cruiser stern boat of 40’, she feels roomy and spacious. She is a prefect holiday boat or, with a few additions, would make a really comfy and homely liveaboard boat.
